VPN Troubleshooting

Initial Troubleshooting Steps for VPN

The following events can interrupt the OpenVPN connection to the Lawton & Cates network:

-       If a user is idle for 60 minutes, the VPN will automatically be disconnected.

-       Poor Internet Connection / Connection Interruption

  • VPN connections require a consistent internet connection at all times:
    • Use a wired connection instead of wireless connection whenever possible. (Network cable going from computer to Router/Modem)
    • Avoid steaming video and online gaming on other devices connected to home network.

-       Poor coverage or service outages can cause the VPN to not respond or disconnect entirely.

How would I know if my VPN connection is not working properly?

-       Unable to access F:/ or extreme slowness when navigating files on the network

-       TABS/PM not opening

What should I do to re-establish connection if I notice issues?

 Disconnect all remote connections

  • Close any RDP connections by closing the Remote Desktop Window.
  • Exit the OpenVPN program by right-clicking the icon in taskbar and selecting Exit.

OpenVPN Taskbar

Re-Connect OpenVPN

  • Double-Click the OpenVPN icon (Orange and Blue Circle Icon on Desktop)
  • Double-click the OpenVPN icon in the taskbar and enter password to re-establish connection.
  • Once connected, allow the connection 30 seconds to sync and try accessing F:/ or other network resources.
