Connect to L2TP VPN

Windows 10


In the search tray, search for “VPN,” and click “Add VPN Connection”




Create the VPN with the following information:

  1. VPN Provider: Windows (built-in)

  2. Connection name: Can be anything you’ll recognize as VPN connection.

  3. Server name or Address: please request from “help@wildcardcorp.com

  4. VPN Type: L2TP/IPsec with pre-shared key

  5. Pre shared key: please request from “help@wildcardcorp.com

  6. Type of sign-in info: User name and password

  7. User name: Windows Login name without the “@gardnercran.com” i.e. “helpdesk” not “helpdesk@gardnercran.com

  8. Password: Windows password

  9. Remember my sign in info: Checked if you want your sign in info remember.

  10. Click save


Under control panel, open up “Network and Sharing Center” and click “Change adapter settings”


Right click on the connection you just created and select properties.


Under the Security Tab, ensure that Data encryption is set to “Maximum strength encryption (disconnect if server declines)” and allow these protocols for “MS-CHAP v2” and “Automatically use my Windows logon name and password”



From the VPN screen you can select the connection you created and hit connect. If a prompt for username and password appear, use your windows login and password.


WINDOWS 7


  • From the Windows Start menu, open Control Panel.

  • Click Network and Internet.

  • In the right pane, click Network and Sharing Center.

  • The Network and Sharing Center appears.

  • Select Set up a new connection or network

  • The New Connection Wizard starts.

  • Click Connect to a workplace and click Next.

  • The Connect to a workplace page appears.

  • If your computer has an existing workplace connection, select No, create a new connection and click Next.

  • The How do you want to connect page appears.

  • Click Use my Internet connection (VPN).

  • The Type the Internet address to connect to page appears.

  • In the Internet address text box, type the hostname or IP address of the Firebox external interface. (Please request this from “help@wildcardcorp.com”)

  • In the Destination name text box, type a name for the Mobile VPN (such as "L2TP to XTM").

  • Select whether you want other people to be able to use this connection.

  • Select the Don’t connect now; just set it up so I can connect later check box so that the client computer does not try to connect at this time.

  • Click Next.

  • The Type your user name and password page appears.

  • Type the User name and Password for this client.

  • Click Create.

  • Click Close.

  • Click Connect to a Network.

  • A list of the configured VPN connections appears.

  • Select the name of the VPN connection you just created. Click Connect.

  • The Connect dialog box appears.

  • Click Properties to edit other properties for this connection.

  • The Properties dialog box appears.

  • The General tab contains the hostname or IP address you provided in the New Connection Wizard. You do not need to change anything on this tab unless the IP address of your Firebox changes.

  • Select the Security tab.

  • From the Type of VPN drop-down list, select Layer 2 Tunneling Protocol with IPsec (L2TP/IPSec).

  • From the Data encryption drop-down list, select Require encryption.

  • Select Microsoft CHAP Version 2 as the only allowed protocol.

  • Select Automatically use my Windows logon name and password

  • Click Advanced settings.

  • The Advanced Properties dialog box appears.

  • If Mobile VPN with L2TP on the Firebox is configured to use a pre-shared key as the IPSec credential method:

    • Select Use pre-shared key for authentication.

    • In the Key text box, type the pre-shared key for this tunnel. (Please request this from “help@wildcardcorp.com”)

  • Click OK.

  • Do not change the default settings on the Networking tab.

  • Click OK.

Start the L2TP Connection

The name of the VPN connection is the destination name you used when you configured the L2TP connection on the client computer. The user name and password refers to one of the users you added to the L2TP-Users group. For more information, see About L2TP User Authentication.

Before you begin, make sure the client computer has an active connection to the Internet.

  • From the Windows Start menu, open Control Panel.

  • Click Network and Internet.

  • In the right pane, click Network and Sharing Center.

  • The Network and Sharing Center appears.

  • Select Connect to a network

  • A list of configured network connections appears.

  • In the connection list, select the name of this VPN connection. Click Connect.

  • Type your user name and password.

  • Click Connect.



MAC OSX


1. Initial configurations (only once at the first time)

Click the network icon on the top-right side on the Mac screen. Click "Open Network Preferences..." in the menu.

Click the "+" button on the network configuration screen.

Select "VPN" as "Interface" , "L2TP over IPsec" as "VPN Type" and click the "Create" button.

A new L2TP VPN configuration will be created, and the configuration screen will appear.

On this screen, you have to specify either hostname or IP address of the destination SoftEther VPN Server.

Server Address: Please request from “help@wildcardcorp.com

Account Name: Windows Login Name

Next, click the "Authentication Settings..." button.

Password: Windows Login Password

Shared Secret: Please request from “help@wildcardcorp.com”

After return to the previous screen, check the "Show VPN status in menu bar" and click the "Advanced..." button.

The advanced settings will be appeared. Check the "Send all traffic over VPN connection" and click the "OK" button.

On the VPN connection settings screen, click the "Connect" button to start the VPN connection.

 

2. Start a VPN connection

You can start a new VPN connection by clicking the "Connect" button at any time. You can also initiate a VPN connection by clicking the VPN icon on the menu bar.

After the VPN connection will be established, the VPN connection setting screen will become as below as the "Status" will be "Connected" . Your private IP address on the VPN, and connect duration time will be displayed on the screen.
